Less than a month, folks. I am so excited, I just might have to dress up.

I just love being a geek sometimes.

The Reader

Ahhh... The Reader did not disappoint. Kate Winslet WAS AMAZING. I think she kicked Meryl's ass, and that's saying something, because I loved Doubt. The Reader is set in Germany during the post Nazi Era, where a boy embarks on a relationship journey with an older woman. The whole first fourth of the movie is done naked. Lots of nudity, people, lots of nudity. The two lovers eventually fall apart and then are reunited under less than happy circumstances. I wont divulge anymore, because you really should rent it.

As a side note, I also watched The Spirit. I was thinking it would be a lot like Sin City, as they were directed by the same folks, but The Spirit lacked spirit. It was just... hokey. And Wrong. I was disappointed on this one folks. Boo.

and here I was having Doubts

Well, no, not really. I was actually really excited to watch Doubt, that just seemed like a good title. No disappointment, either! Doubt was great. From the acting to its subtle setting and color scheme, I was truly impressed. Meryl Streep, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams were more than wonderful. The movie is set within the walls of a Catholic Church and School. Streep's character is principal at the school and Adams is a teacher (both are nuns). Hoffman plays the pastor who is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

What I really can't wait to see is whether or not Kate Winslet really did deserve best actress. Meryl is going to be hard to beat!

I am almost through my list of Academy Award Winners and Nominees. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Revolutionary Road, The Reader, Frost/Nixon and The Wrestler are all I have left.

Best Picture

I just finished watching Slumdog Millionaire, and for those of you who haven't seen it yet; you should! It won Best Picture and lots of other awards this year at the Oscars. It's got something for everyone, action, comedy, romance, you name it! Salim, Jamal and Latika are the primary focus of this story, and it's one you don't want to miss. Enjoy! *Doubt comes out tomorrow and it next on my list of movies to see, so I will report back soon!

As a side note, Mark started "hell week" today and I was a wonderful wife who had dinner on the table and hot when he got home. It wasn't pizza either! I made pork tenderloin, rice and salad. He is asleep already. As in, for the night. This morning started off with a bang when he forgot his codes to get in. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. He was delirious when he got home, but smiling so I will take that as a hopeful hint that the rest of the week will pass quickly for him. I wanted to get a picture of him when he got home, but I can't seem to find the camera. hopefully I will catch one tomorrow.

Rachel Getting Married

One of the movies to see I wrote about in a previous blog was Rachel Getting Married. Anne Hathaway was nominated for an Academy award for her role in this film. I finally got to see it today, and it did not disappoint. I was intrigued by the topic of the film- I actually wasn't sure what it was about, so imagine my surprise when it turns out to be about a girl getting out of rehab just in time to attend her sister's wedding. Anne Hathaway was brilliant in this movie. It has lots of textures musically, which I always enjoy and I'm guessing it was a tough call for the academy this year when they chose Penelope Cruz for her work in Vicky Christina Barcelona. Penelope was FANTASTIC in her role, but I'm not sure she would have landed my vote over Anne.

Ah Anne. We love you so...

You gotta give 'em hope

Go watch Milk. It came out today on DVD and was on my list of acadamy award winners to watch.

It's message is moving and very real. It's hard to believe 30 years later, we're still fighting for Gay rights.

Into the time Capsule!

Recently, I have been watching what I will refer to as "Period Movies". Everyone has seen one, I am sure, but I have fallen into a rut with them. A rut I am very happy to never come out of, to be quite honest. Here are my recent faves:

Pride and Prejudice (with Keira Knightly)
Quills (with Kate Winslet- it's older and about a man in a mental institution who write scandalous love stories)
Amazing Grace (I didn't know any of the actors in this film, but it's about the abolition of slavery in England and freaking rocked.)
The Duchess (Keira Knightly again)
The Other Boleyn Girl (Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johanssen)
Marie Antoinette (Kirstin Dunst- it's about King Louie and his wife who said "let them eat cake")
Becoming Jane (Anne Hathaway- this one is about Jane Austen's life before she became a writer)
Atonement (Keira Knightly this one's about two people who fell in love and someone misinterpreting their love for one another)


All of these movies are set in England or France in between the 1700's and Early 1800's.
I love everything about them, the rich culture of Early France with it's gilded piping and floral patterns to English men and their way of always bowing to a lady. Love it, Love it, Love it.

If you are a geek like me, you will probably like these quite a bit.
